Children’s Future provides educational and social work services to 251 students in Battambang, Cambodia. Born and raised in California, Sopheak was always inspired to explore his Khmer-American heritage and visit the village in Cambodia his mother was born and raised in and then escaped from during the Khmer Rouge. After being introduced to Children’s Future, Sopheak wanted to share something close to his heart with the students and established a music program at the Learning Center.
Sopheak’s time in Battambang was not only for volunteering, but also a time for personal exploration by meeting many family members for the first time. After spending time with his grandparents and uncle, Sopheak became a much loved member of the community. Now back in Denver, Sopheak has intentions to go back to Battambang because as the locals say, “Battamband mean dey sauut” - meaning “the dirt is very sticky in Battambang” and it is impossible to leave.
